Description: ApolloMusendetail

“Where Time the measure of all moving is;
And Dauncing is a moving all in measure…”
             ~Sir John Davies,
Orchestra: or, a Poem of Dancing (1596)

Come experience the sublime beauty and graceful majesty of Renaissance lute music and dance performed by The Venere Lute Quartet and The New York Historical Dance Company as they present a program from the age of Shakespeare, Rubens and Galileo. The program features works from Italian Renaissance sources, and the Dutch Thysius manuscript which reflected the international spirit of the time.

A diversity of works to soothe and excite the passions has been carefully selected. Vigorous galliards, saltarellos and canarios rub shoulders with plangent pavans, ballets, and fantasies; virtuoso pieces with fiery fingerings and fast footwork are cooled by intimate, reflective music making. The elegant music performed by an ensemble of four lutenists and graceful movement of the fully costumed dancers will transform the audience to another time and place. Participate in the spirit of the time as several simple Renaissances dances will be taught at the end of the program.
